Having been on my radar for some time after receiving endless praise for their cheap, delicious laksas I finally had the pleasure of visiting the King of Laksas on a bustling Sunday evening.
Situated right near Newmarket station, upon arrival we squished ourselves into a line of fellow laksa goers and were told that there would be a table in 30 minutes. 30 minutes exactly later we were seated and eyeing off the extensive menu, which doesn’t only include laksa but an array of drool worthy offerings. We quickly ordered the roti with satay, a comination laksa and the Smoked duck breast with apple chilli vinaigrette butter sauce – a chefs menu item. The roti arrived super quick and was accompanied by a sea of rich satay sauce.
The Combination Laksa was a creamy coconutty and rich . Each slurp contained a potent hit of chilli. Brimming with shrimp, fishcake and chicken, a food-coma inducing serve will only set you back about $10. J admitted to having food envy after tasting my laksa. Admittedly his duck, whilst pretty good, could not compare to the fragrant creamy laksa.
The duck was soft and had that slight woody smokiness. Despite this, there wasn’t much flavour even when paired with the fresh apple slaw. It is intended as a delicate dish, however, because the flavours don’t excite the senses, it comes across as a disappointing dish. The service is the standard quick, efficient and not conversational that is expected from high-turnover-cheap restaurants – not that this is a bad thing.
Would we return? Yes, but only for their laksas.
